COLNAGO C40 ART DECOR MK2
In 1994, Colnago began producing its very successful C40 model - "C" for Carbon and "40" to commemorate Colnago's 40th anniversary. The first frame in full carbon construction connected with lugs also made of carbon fibres.
Ernesto Colnago solved the problem of making a carbon frame strong enough to win the most demanding cobbled classics, yet light enough to soar up alpine passes. This is the reason why the C40 is the all-time favorite bike for so many - including Sir Bradley Wiggins. By the standards of the time, Colnago could have created something with a perhaps slightly futuristic profile to match its revolutionary design. Instead, the C40 model kept the tubes in the classic geometry - albeit with the star-shaped cross-section that the steel Master model pioneered.
Ernesto himself said “When we built the C40, we were the only ones building carbon frames, and all the competitor mechanics and technicians said it would be too dangerous to use them on cobbled roads, especially with straight carbon forks. The night before the Paris-Roubaix race, I spoke on the phone with Mr. Squinzi, the boss of Mapei, who expressed concerns about using such a delicate structure. I told him we had done all the frame and fork tests we could and we were sure there would be no problem. I had to take personal responsibility for what was going to happen, and I was up all night worrying about it, I could barely sleep. But when I heard that there were 4 Mapei riders at half-time, I knew I could relax. What happened shocked the entire cycling world - the C40 won 5 editions of Paris-Roubaix in the next 6 years!
